The time has come to say goodbye, at least for now. As the semester is coming to a close, so is my blog. I have decided to take a hiatus until the the New Year. I was very please with my work so far, some of my favorite post have been the Woof Walk, my Bookmates literacy program training, and the Campout for Hunger. As always, I encourage you to get involved in your community. No matter how big or small, the philosopher Aesop once said “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” Happy Holidays!

The Preston and Steve show on WMMR 93.3 are absolutely are the best thing that has ever happened to morning radio. Besides brightening up my mornings that have taking part in many charitable events throughout the years. Following annual tradition, the morning team camped out for hunger for an entire week. They faced the cold winter elements with their morning show team, broadcasting live each morning.

Preston and Steve camped out in a RV in the parking lot at the Metroplex Shopping Center in Plymouth Meeting, PA (Montgomery County) This charity event is the largest single sourced food drive in the country. Canned goods and non-perishable food were collected to benefit Philabundance, a food bank in Philadelphia that helps to feed the hungry here in the Delaware Valley. I have always been interested in volunteering abroad. However, time constraints and being a broke college student have prevented me from doing so. After doing some research I found it’s not as expensive as I thought. Most volunteering abroad programs can lower the total expense of a regular  vacation because volunteers are only responsible for only their ticket, transportation, and extras.  Accommodations are generally taken care of. Volunteers can choose what country they will be in and what kind of work they will be doing.  Whatever your skills and talents are, there is something for everybody.  Some examples:

-Help communities grow and prosper by building and constructing better irrigation, schools, and other institutions
-Teach English
-Help children in the classroom (reading, writing etc)
-Provide Outreach for Health (information on hygiene, HIV Prevention)
-Caregiving
-Work towards woman’s development
-Scientific Research

There are many opportunities and organizations that provide volunteering abroad.

Many animals are in need of loving homes year-round. If you are thinking of adding a furry addition to your family, check out your local shelter. There is an abundance of animals in need of loving homes that will provide you and your family with an excellent companion and friend. The adoption process should not be taken lightly as you are opening your home to a new family member. Lets take a look at the adoption process and the suggestions of the local animal shelters.

“We get over crowded, a lot cause the animals we get in here. A lot of people don’t adopt because of the economy. We have to put a lot more animals down than usual. For everyone dog, maybe ten cats don’t get adopted.” - Mervin Curtis Gloucester County Animal Attendant

“ I know that a lot of people are giving away their dogs because they can’t afford them. The application process is easy, just fill out the paper work, it takes up to a week. Then its good for a year so there is no pressure to adopt. “ - Tracy Mattozo Potential Adopter

             Considerations for potential adopters:

“Number one it’s a lifetime commitment. Cats will live to be 18 to 20 years. Dogs will live an average of probably 12 to 18 year depending on size and breed of the dog. They need to go to the vet very year, need healthcare just like we do. Some of the dogs need to be kept on heart worm preventives, so they don’t get heart worms. Cats live longer if they are inside. It’s not cheap. If you keep them on good food and take them to the vet once a year you should have your pet for a long time.” Judy Hibbs Adoption Clerk
